Jennifer Aniston Wore the Staple Your Closet Is Probably Missing

Publish date: 2024-06-13

Living in a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is a dream and all, but when you see the lack of closet space, it’s not always ideal for a fashion editor (ahem, me!). Organizing and regular cleaning is an obvious must — but so is investing in quality pieces that I can wear in the summer, fall, winter, and spring. That means I can keep it in my closet year-round, without having to  swap it out for something more seasonally appropriate. It’s one piece that can be worn infinite ways, and that makes it an investment piece in and of itself.

You’re probably thinking — “but Eva, what’s one such staple that actually works for every season?” And to answer that, I kindly direct you to a recent Jennifer Aniston outfit that features one of the best. The actress, who much like me, loves her all-black looks, recently attended a special screening of Past Lives in Los Angeles looking like a true New Yorker / like her OG Rachel Green self in head-to-toe black. Her East Coast-inspired outfit consisted of leather trousers, a must, and a turtleneck tank top, a triple must because though it’s ideal for wintertime, you can just as easily wear it in the spring, summer, and fall.

Aniston’s top is unfussy, as in, it’s super simple and there’s nothing particularly “trendy” about it. In fact, I would say it belongs into the classics category of things — alongside black trousers, a trench coat, and a good white button-up — because it always feels relevant and will never go out of style thanks to its simplicity.

What’s more, it also combines the best of both worlds in terms of seasonality — it has a high neckline (ahem, that turtleneck), that’s a must-have this time of year, as it basically doubles as a scarf, mixed with a sleeveless design, a spring and summer favorite because, well, let those arms breathe! While the way you style it will obviously change based on the time of year — layering it in the winter and wearing it on its own when the temperatures rise — the ethos is all the same: classic, simple, ageless.

Aniston isn’t the only celebrity to make a case for the turtleneck tank top. Meghan Markle was seen wearing the staple on her The Cut cover back in 2022 and then again in 2023. Nicole Kidman is also a fan of the style, wearing it to a sports outing with pal Reese Witherspoon last summer. Clearly, this piece also has range, given it’s suitable for magazine covers, L.A. screenings, and sports games, so in addition to its seasonal versatility, it also has wearing versatility. Really, what’s not to love about it?

Trust me when I say the turtleneck tank top is the perfect combination of two staples — and you will fall head over heels for it. Shop styles inspired by Aniston’s, below.
